Captain & Crew

Intrepid Sportfishing is now owner-managed which means everything will now be maintained to a much higher standard than before.

Captain Rick Reger has been fishing for a living since age 15, working weekends and summer seasons on San Diego sport boats. He aquired his 100 ton Master's License at age 22. The following year he moved to Kona and started commercial tuna fishing and he eventually bought his own boat - a 28' Force. He fished 250+ days a year and gained extensive local knowledge of the currents, structures and topography of the Kona Coast. During the past several years he has also crewed or een relief captain on many Kona charter boats and has worked with most of Kona's veteran skippers.

Rick is proficient in many techniques including bait & switch, saltwater fly fishing, live baiting, standup and unlimited 130lb tackle. Rick's largest fish to date is a 955lb Blue Marlin. Rick's career has been very diverse from commercial salmon fishing in Alaska to San Diego, Cabo San Lucas, the Bahamas, and eventually settling here in Kona. He has extensive night swordfish and tuna fishing experience as well as working elbow to elbow with Kona's finest. Rick is an up and coming force in Kona sportfishing.

Captain Doug Dankanyin started fishing professionally at age 14, got his 100 ton Master's License and started fishing Cabo San Lucas in 1984 & 1985. He ran private yachts between San Diego and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo until 1995 when he bought his first charterboat - a 58' Norseman. He ran a busy charter service fishing tuna in San Diego, striped marlin in the Magdalena Bay Area and blue and black marlin and tuna from Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Barra de Navidad and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo until September 2005 when he purchased Intrepid.
